The new directive states that clinicians must evaluate each patient individually to determine whether the benefits of the vaccination outweigh the risks of any potential side effects.
As of last Thursday, 42,000 people in Norway had received their first dose of the vaccine. The institute said in a statement on Friday that of the 23 deaths, 13 have so far been evaluated by the Norwegian Medicines Agency and the National Institute of Public Health.
Sigurd Hurtemo, chief physician at the Norwegian Medicines Agency, said the evaluations indicated that common adverse reactions to mRNA vaccines, such as fever and nausea, may have contributed to fatal outcomes in some vulnerable patients.
The statement added, „We cannot rule out that adverse reactions to the vaccine that occur in the first days after vaccination (such as fever and nausea) may contribute to a more dangerous course and fatal outcome in patients with acute underlying disease.“
In a statement sent to CNN on Saturday, Pfizer said it was aware of the reported deaths and „our direct thoughts are with the bereaved families.“
